What is shock wave therapy about?
Shock waves are waves possessing energy and propagating through a medium (solid, liquid or gas). When a flow moves faster than the “information” prior to its arrival – the medium cannot get out of the way. Thus the arriving energy causes a sudden, almost instantaneous change in the medium has been crossed, which can be a change in pressure, temperature or even density.
The first step in utilization of the shock waves in medical equipment was the discovery, that direction of extracorporeal shockwaves (generated outside the body) and the location, where the energy is absorbed can be accurately determined.
The first therapeutic device was a lithotripter, which pulverizes biliary and kidney stones with its high-intensity shock-waves focused by means of acoustic lenses, thus they can be removed without operation through natural wash-out.
According to estimations more than one million patients are treated annually with this method in US alone.
By reduction of the shock waves’ energy more and more areas have been opened for utilization of the device. By using low energy shock waves the properly focused energy provokes production of pro-angiogenic tissue factors and blood flow stimulants, which are further strengthened by micro-traumatizing cavitation and tissue tension. Thus the blood circulation of the affected improves, its hemodynamics accelerates and new capillaries are formed.
Everyone would like a spontaneous sexual desire, a healthy sexual life free from anxiety – but sometimes difficulties arise. Erectile dysfunction occurs in half of the adult male population. Pharmaceutical treatments brought about a revolutionary change in management of the problem, but they manage only the symptoms without elimination of the cause. Dependency from drugs further damages self-esteem and makes spontaneity impossible.
Shock-wave therapy is a new, innovative approach in the treatment of erectile dysfunction!
It treats erectile dysfunction of vascular origin with utilization of shock wave energy– which was introduced into impotence therapy in 2010. Its outcomes are proved by findings from research published in leading medical journals and international conferences, and the fact, that the CE marked equipment is becoming more and more widespread in Europe as well as in other countries of the world. The treatment improves the dynamics of the penile blood flow and induces angiogenesis.
One of impotence’s causes that “engorgement” basically responsible for erection cannot come off because of vessels’ diseases. Low energy shock waves generated by ED1000 quasi “bomb” the penile vessels thus stimulating the blood circulation.
Applying on a proper way with a proper timing and frequency significant improvement can be achieved in more than 70 % of the treated patients even if the “blue pill” therapy has no benefit. The erectile function improves, and the results persist even one year after, which makes satisfying sexual activity possible improving quality of life for the patient and his partner.
What are the risks of the treatment?
According to medical literature there is no known risk of low energy shock wave therapy of the penis.
In the framework of an international research nor side effects, nor damage were reported.
Although haven’t happened yet, occurrence of mild, transitory complications i.e. local swelling or redness, minor subcutaneous bruises, temporal tingle or numbness is theoretically conceivable. The result of the treatment is a persistent one.
How often is the treatment necessary?
A 9-week therapy recommended. Two treatment sessions per week for 3 weeks, then a 3-week long interval, then two treating sessions per week for 3 weeks again, which means 12 sessions, and 18.000 shock waves in total.
The time span of an intervention is approx. 30 minutes.
EDSWT is a computer-controlled therapy, and its result becomes perceptible to the patient already in the second week of the treatment. One treatment session means 300 shock waves on 5 different anatomic regions.
What happens during the treatment?
In all cases treatment should be preceded by specialist’s examination and consultation, since the procedure is qualified and capable for treatment of vascular problems exclusively – more efficiently and especially with no pain and no operation in turn.
Therapy is pain-free, causes no inconvenience, there is no need for anesthesia.
No special preparations are required for the treatment. The patient lays himself conveniently down on the treating bed. Gel should be applied to the skin of the penis, which – similar to the ultrasound gel – causes cold sensation. Treating physician touch the applicator on the skin of the penis then starts the shock wave therapy. 5 regions are treated during one session, which means 1500 shock waves in total. There is no need for waiting or resting after the treatment.
Whom the treatment is not recommended to?
As stated above the therapy should be preceded by specialist’s detailed examination. However the procedure is not recommended in the following cases:
- directly after prostate surgery
- if the cause of the erectile dysfunction are Pyrenie syndrome or spinal cord injury
- in case of a hematopoietic disease
- in severe heart disease
- in case of a pelvic tumor or after that within 5 years
- within 7 days after penile injection or vacuum therapy
